I agree with you there -I know a few of those in real life!
Same here - I was letting my feelings for my father taint my view of the character. It was natural, some of the things D'Argo said and done are identical to things I've been on the receiving end of...but even so, D'Argo's worst days are more comparable to my dad's best, and even my dad has great qualities and I love him. So I had to completely disentangle them in my mind, and once I did that, I found myself feeling softer towards both of them...
And it made reading/writing smut with D'Argo involved possible, which in turn made me like his relationship with Chiana more, which made me like him more...a nice, positive circle :)
Writing D'Argo in any context actually helped the most. I strive to be objective and fair and to portray the characters as the others see them, or as they're meant to be, whatever my personal feelings. I couldn't vilify him, so I had to understand him instead, and look at the world through his eyes.
