Farscape Picspam: Throne for a Loss
Throne for a Loss in ten pictures.
I thought going through these early episodes would strengthen my current John/Aeryn leanings, but instead it’s reminding me of how I kind of sort of used to ship Aeryn/D’Argo…I thought they had a lively chemistry and more intriguing story possibilities at this point in the series. I liked John better as a character and a man, but I so wanted to see Aeryn & D’Argo hook up before she fell for John. The whole "I hate you but I get you because we're both kick-ass warriors stuck on a ship of fools" thing is hot and her connecting first with a man who is more mentally, rather than physically, similar appeals to me. *hides from flames and exploding heads*

As for your comment, there is no need to hide! LOL
The connection between Aeryn and D'Argo is indeed strong, and it's not just here - think of the conversation in the tree in I, ET, for example, or the gesture (hand on shoulder) in Exodus from Genesis.
The chemistry was there, yes, but the early Aeryn - the one who had still to fall for the crazy Erpman - was still too attached to her old values to even consider a liaison with someone like D'Argo. It would have broken too many taboos, there would have been a far greater degree of conditioning to overcome.
And yet the subtle indications *are* there... Tantalizing....

Oh, I very much agree with this now *nods* I shipped them only my first time through the series, before we were told and shown more about Aeryn's views, before I knew how long (and wonderful) her journey would be.
Looking at it now I know it would be impossible for anything to actually happen, and remain true to the character. I've heard it said John initially was open to feelings for Aeryn because she looked Human; and I feel that if that's true, it's also true in reverse - Aeryn could be close to him because he looked Sebacean. D'Argo was far too Other...and by the time he wasn't, she'd developed deeper feelings for John, and who he was on the inside.
But I do still find the D'Argo/Aeryn chemistry more interesting than Aeryn/John during the first 3rd or so of S1 (I also love the Zhaan/John vibe). For me it's both more natural and less expected...that sounds negative but I don't mean it to be.

Oh yes! If memory serves me right, some thoughts were given to developing this thread, and the seeds were indeed there in the first part of S1.
A nod to the "road not taken" is given (IMHO) at the end of The Flax, when J & A try to deny that anything of import happened on the pod, and they both agree that if Aeryn had been with D'Argo or John with Zhaan, things would have followed the same course.

The unexpected would have made Farscape even more ground-breaking than it already was. And this from someone who enjoys immensely the J&A dynamics... :-)

I could see Aeryn have some sort of relationship with someone else, like D’argo, on Moya before John. It’s not like they were meant to be together from the start, if you really give it some thought and don’t buy the TV cliches and all the artificially created proximity warnings ;)

I was surprised at the number of humorous moments in the episode; I didn't remember it being that amusing. I really have to do a proper rewatch sometime.

Funny about shipping, when I was watching for the first time, at the beginning I thought they (the creators) would get Zhaan and D'Argo together. Well, it has nothing to do with this episode but in some other episodes there were moments of... closeness and chemistry between them. At least from my point of view.

And I can see Zhaan/D'Argo too - they don't "spark" for me, but definitely feel the closeness, and possibilities for a deeper relationship :)
